Products & Choosing a Mower
Questions about models, features, and selecting the right mower
What's the difference between a cylinder mower and a rotary mower?
Cylinder mowers (also called reel mowers) use a rotating cylinder of blades that cut grass against a fixed bed knife, similar to scissors. This creates a clean, precise cut. Rotary mowers use a single spinning blade that tears grass, similar to a machete.
Key differences:
Cylinder Mowers (Allett):
- Cut grass cleanly like scissors
- Create defined stripes and patterns
- Can mow as low as 3mm (0.12")
- Require flat, well-maintained lawns
- More expensive upfront
- Professional/golf course quality results
- Healthier grass (clean cuts heal faster)
Rotary Mowers (Traditional):
- Tear grass rather than cut
- No striping capability
- Typically mow 1-3" minimum
- Handle rough terrain and tall grass
- Less expensive
- Suitable for neglected lawns
- More forgiving for beginners
Best for cylinder mowing: Well-maintained residential lawns, sports fields, golf courses, and anyone who wants professional-quality results and enjoys lawn care as a hobby.
Best for rotary mowing: Rough terrain, neglected lawns, commercial mowing where speed matters more than quality, or very casual lawn owners.
Which Allett mower model is right for me?
The right model depends on your lawn size, grass type, usage frequency, and goals. Here's a quick guide:
Table goes here.
Not sure? Contact us at sales@allett.ca or use our interactive "Find Your Mower" tool on the website.
What is the cartridge system and why does it matter?
The cartridge system allows you to quickly swap cutting cylinders (reels) for different tasks without tools or expertise. Instead of owning separate mowers for mowing, scarifying, aerating, etc., you buy one mower and multiple cartridges.
Three cartridge systems:
- Quick Change (QC)
Found on: Liberty and Kensington ranges
Swap time: ~5 minutes
Tools required: Basic screwdrivers and wrenches
Process: Remove side cover, belt, and four fixings - Rapid Change (RC)
Found on: Cambridge range
Swap time: ~1 minute
Tools required: 5mm Allen key
Process: Undo two screws (one on each side) - Ultra Change (UC)
Found on: Stirling range
Swap time: 15 seconds
Tools required: None (tool-free)
Process: Lift two tabs and remove cartridge
Available cartridge types (all systems):
- 6-blade cutting cylinder (standard mowing)
- 10-blade cutting cylinder (fine finish, 3mm capable)
- Scarifier (removes thatch and moss)
- Aerator (relieves compaction)
- Dethatcher (light thatch removal)
- Verticut (cuts into turf surface)
- Lawn brush (stands grass up and collects debris)
Important: Cartridges are NOT interchangeable between systems. You must match both the system type (QC / RC / UC) and the width (14", 17", or 20").
Should I get a 6-blade or 10-blade cutting cylinder?
It depends on your lawn goals and maintenance commitment:
6-Blade Cylinder:
- Cutting range: 6mm-25mm (0.25"-1")
- Best for: Most residential lawns, weekly mowing, forgiving
- Pros: More forgiving to lawn imperfections, cuts taller grass, less maintenance
- Cons: Not as fine a finish, can't achieve ultra-low cuts
- Ideal user: Most homeowners, first-time cylinder mower owners
10-Blade Cylinder:
- Cutting range: 3mm-20mm (0.12"-0.75")
- Best for: Enthusiasts, daily/frequent mowing, premium finish
- Pros: Finest possible cut, incredible stripe definition, golf-green quality
- Cons: Requires more frequent mowing, less forgiving to lawn issues, needs more maintenance
- Ideal user: Serious enthusiasts, those who mow 2-3+ times per week
Most customers start with 6-blade and upgrade to 10-blade once they're comfortable with cylinder mowing and their lawn is in excellent condition. Many owners have both and swap based on season (10-blade during peak growing season, 6-blade during stress periods).
What's the difference between electric, battery, and petrol models?
Allett offers multiple power options depending on model:
Electric (Corded):
- Available on: Liberty E-Series, Kensington Electric
- Pros: Quiet, zero emissions, low maintenance, instant power
- Cons: Cord management required, limited range (extension cord length)
- Best for: Small to medium lawns (up to 5,000 sq ft), quiet neighborhoods, eco-conscious owners
- Power: 1200-1800W depending on model
Battery (Cordless):
- Available on: Kensington Battery models
- Pros: Cordless freedom, quiet, zero emissions, no fuel
- Cons: Battery runtime limits (30-60 min), charging time, battery replacement cost
- Best for: Medium lawns (2,000-6,000 sq ft), noise-sensitive areas
- Battery: Typically 48V lithium-ion
Petrol (Gas):
- Available on: All Liberty, Kensington, Cambridge, Stirling, C-Series
- Pros: Unlimited runtime, more power for larger areas, proven technology
- Cons: Noise, emissions, fuel/oil maintenance, regular servicing required
- Best for: Larger lawns, commercial use, areas without power access
- Engine: Briggs & Stratton or Honda, typically 2.5-6 HP depending on model
Which to choose: Electric/battery for small-medium lawns and environmental priorities. Petrol for large lawns, commercial use, or maximum runtime.
Can I use an Allett mower on slopes or uneven terrain?
Cylinder mowers work best on relatively flat, even surfaces. Here's what you need to know:
Slope capability:
- Most Allett mowers can handle gentle slopes (up to 10-15 degrees)
- Steeper slopes become dangerous and difficult to control
- Self-propelled models handle slopes better than manual push
- Mow across slopes (perpendicular) rather than up/down when possible
Uneven terrain:
- Cylinder mowers struggle with bumps, dips, and uneven surfaces
- The bed knife and cutting cylinder need consistent ground contact
- Bumpy lawns will result in uneven cutting (scalping on high spots, missing low spots)
- If your lawn has significant unevenness, you'll need to level it first (top-dressing, rolling)
Terrain preparation:
- Spring/fall rolling helps level surface
- Top-dressing fills low spots
- Aerating and overseeding improves overall lawn density
- Fixing low/high spots before cylinder mowing makes a huge difference
Bottom line: If your lawn has significant slopes (over 15 degrees) or major unevenness, a rotary mower may be more suitable. If you have minor unevenness, you can improve it over time while using a cylinder mower.
How much lawn area can I mow per charge/tank?
Coverage depends on power source, model, and conditions:
Battery Models:
- Kensington 14B: ~2,000-3,000 sq ft per charge (45-60 min runtime)
- Kensington 17B: ~3,000-4,000 sq ft per charge (45-60 min runtime)
- Factors affecting runtime: Grass thickness, height, battery age, terrain
Electric (Corded) Models:
- Unlimited runtime (as long as you have power)
- Limited by extension cord length (~150-200 ft practical maximum)
- Can cover any size lawn if you have power access
Petrol Models:
- Liberty/Kensington (small tank): ~5,000-8,000 sq ft per tank
- Stirling/C-Series (larger tank): ~10,000-15,000+ sq ft per tank
- Fuel consumption varies by grass thickness, height, and mowing speed
Pro tip: Battery users with larger lawns often buy a second battery to swap mid-mow for extended runtime.
What grass types work best with cylinder mowers?
Cylinder mowers work best with fine-textured, dense, cool-season grasses common in Canada:
Excellent for cylinder mowing:
- Kentucky Bluegrass - Canada's most popular lawn grass, handles low cutting
- Perennial Ryegrass - Fine texture, fast growing, excellent stripe response
- Fine Fescue (creeping red, chewing, hard) - Shade tolerant, fine texture
- Colonial Bentgrass - Very fine texture, golf green quality (high maintenance)
Good for cylinder mowing:
- Tall Fescue - Coarser texture but works well if mowed regularly
- Bluegrass/Ryegrass/Fescue blends - Most common in Canada, works well
Not recommended:
- Warm-season grasses (Bermuda, Zoysia, St. Augustine) - Too coarse, prefer rotary
- Ornamental grasses - Too tall/coarse for cylinder mowing
- Meadow grasses - Meant to grow tall, not suitable for regular mowing
Regional recommendations:
- BC Coastal: Perennial ryegrass, fine fescue (tolerates moisture)
- Prairies: Kentucky bluegrass, fescue blends (handles cold, drought)
- Ontario/Quebec: Kentucky bluegrass, ryegrass blends (most versatile)
- Maritimes: Perennial ryegrass, fescue (handles cool, moist conditions)
Not sure what you have? Most Canadian lawns are Kentucky bluegrass or bluegrass/ryegrass blends—both excellent for cylinder mowing.
Do I need any other equipment besides the mower?
While the mower is the core tool, a few additional items make lawn care easier:
Essential (included or built-in):
- Grass collection box (included with mower)
- Height adjustment mechanism (built into mower)
Highly recommended accessories:
- Additional cartridges: Scarifier and aerator cartridges for lawn health maintenance
- Spare cutting cylinder: For zero-downtime rotation (see Reel Exchange program)
- Roller (if not included): Creates stripes, helps level lawn
Nice to have:
- Lawn roller (heavy): For spring/fall leveling
- Spray marker: Helps maintain straight lines while learning
- HOC gauge: Ensures accurate height of cut settings
- Storage cover: Protects mower during off-season
Lawn care tools (not Allett-specific):
- Spreader for fertilizer and seed
- Core aerator (if not using aerator cartridge)
- Edger or trimmer for borders
- Leaf blower for debris removal before mowing
Our recommendation: Start with just the mower and add cartridges/accessories as you identify needs. Many customers buy a scarifier cartridge within their first year for spring dethatching.

Service & Maintenance
Questions about maintaining, servicing, and repairing your mower
How often does my mower need professional service?
Service frequency depends on usage intensity:
Residential (weekly mowing):
- Minimum: Annual pre-season tune-up (spring)
- Recommended: Spring tune-up + fall winterization
- Includes: Oil change, spark plug, air filter, belt check, blade contact adjustment, HOC calibration
High-use residential (2-3x/week):
- Recommended: Twice per year (spring + mid-season)
- Includes: All annual service + mid-season belt replacement, bearing check
Light commercial (daily use):
- Recommended: 3-4 times per year (spring, mid-season, fall, winter prep)
- Includes: More frequent consumable replacement, detailed inspections
Heavy commercial:
- Recommended: Every 200-300 operating hours OR quarterly
- Includes: Full commercial service schedule, parts replacement as needed
Our Maintenance Plans structure service around these intervals automatically. See Maintenance Plans page for details.
What happens if I skip service?
- Accelerated wear on belts, bearings, engine
- Poor cut quality (dull reel, poor blade contact)
- Unexpected breakdowns during peak season
- Potential warranty claim denials (lack of maintenance documentation)
How often should I sharpen the reel?
Reel sharpening frequency depends on usage and conditions:
Typical schedule:
- Residential (weekly) 1x per year (spring)
- High-use residential 2x per year
- Light commercial 2-4x per year
- Heavy commercial Every 200-300 hours
Signs you need sharpening:
- Grass tips look torn/ragged instead of clean-cut
- Grass browns within 24-48 hours after mowing
- Poor or inconsistent stripes
- Mower requires more power/effort than usual
- Inconsistent "ticking" sound (bed knife contact)
Professional sharpening vs DIY:
- Professional (recommended): $100 per reel at Allett Canada, includes grinding, bed knife adjustment, bearing inspection, balance check
- DIY: Possible with specialized equipment (grinding machine), but most owners don't have this
- Avoid: DIY attempts with files or hand grinding—ruins reel geometry
Our Reel Exchange Program provides zero-downtime sharpening. See Reel Exchange page for details.
Can I do maintenance myself, or do I need professional service?
You can handle basic maintenance yourself; professional service is needed for specialized tasks:
DIY-friendly maintenance:
- Cleaning after each use (grass removal, wipe down)
- Grass box emptying and cleaning

- Basic lubrication (accessible grease points)
Professional service recommended:
- Reel sharpening (requires specialized grinding equipment)
- Bed knife adjustment (requires precision gauges)
- Belt replacement (technical, requires proper tension)
- Height of cut calibration (requires specialized gauges)
- Bearing inspection/replacement (requires disassembly)
- Engine servicing (if you're not comfortable with small engines)
Why professional service matters:
- Cylinder mowers are precision instruments (tolerances measured in fractions of millimeters)
- Improper adjustments cause poor cut quality or damage
- Professional service maintains warranty coverage
- Specialized tools ensure proper settings
Our maintenance plans include professional service at appropriate intervals. See Maintenance Plans page.

Technical & Usage
Questions about using, adjusting, and operating your mower
How do I set the height of cut on my mower?
Height of cut (HOC) adjustment varies slightly by model but generally follows this process:
Most Allett models:
- Locate adjustment mechanism (typically front roller or lever system)
- Loosen locking mechanism (pin, lever, or nut depending on model)
- Adjust to desired height (scale marked on mower, typically in mm or fractions of inch)
- Lock mechanism securely
- Verify both sides equal (critical for even cut)
- Test cut on small area before full mow
Height of cut ranges by model:
- Liberty/Kensington: Typically 10mm-25mm (0.4"-1")
- Stirling: Typically 6mm-25mm (0.25"-1")
- 10-blade cylinders: Can go as low as 3mm (0.12") on some models
- 6-blade cylinders: Typically 6mm minimum (0.25")
Common HOC settings:
- Sports turf: 10-15mm (0.4"-0.6")
- Golf green quality: 6-10mm (0.25"-0.4")
- Standard residential: 15-20mm (0.6"-0.8")
- Summer stress: 20-25mm (0.8"-1")
Tips:
- Start higher than you think you need
- Lower gradually over multiple mows (don't drop from 25mm to 10mm in one cut)
- Measure actual HOC with ruler to verify setting accuracy
- HOC can drift over time—check periodically
Need help? Our Education/CTCA page has video tutorials for each model's HOC adjustment.
How often should I mow my lawn?
Mowing frequency depends on grass growth rate, season, and desired quality:
The 1/3 Rule:
Never remove more than 1/3 of grass blade height in one mowing. This is the most important rule.
Typical frequency:
- Spring (peak growth): 2-3x per week (grass grows fast)
- Summer (moderate growth): 1-2x per week (depends on watering/fertilization)
- Fall (moderate growth): 1-2x per week (cool-season grass thrives)
- Winter: Minimal (only in mild climates where grass grows)
By maintenance level:
- Championship/enthusiast: 3-7x per week (daily mowing for finest results)
- High-quality residential: 2-3x per week
- Standard residential: 1-2x per week
- Low-maintenance: 1x per week minimum (cutting more than 1/3 harms grass)
Signs you're mowing too frequently:
- Grass becomes thin or weak
- Excessive wear patterns from mower wheels
- Grass doesn't have time to recover between mows
Signs you're not mowing frequently enough:
- Grass looks torn (removing too much at once)
- Grass clumps in grass box
- Mower struggles (bogs down)
- Poor stripe quality
For best results with cylinder mowing: Frequent mowing (2-3x/week during growth season) produces finest results. The "little and often" approach is ideal.
Should I mulch or bag clippings?
With cylinder mowers, bagging (collection) is almost always recommended:
Why cylinder mowers work best with bagging:
- Clippings are very short and fine (unlike rotary mowers)
- Leaving clippings can smother grass and affect stripe appearance
- Collection maintains clean, manicured look
- Prevents thatch buildup
- Allows you to see cutting quality
- All Allett mowers include grass collection box (capacity varies by model)
When you might leave clippings:
- During extreme drought (clippings provide minimal moisture retention)
- When mowing very short (clippings are so fine they disappear into turf)
- If you're mowing very frequently (minimal clipping volume)
Mulching:
- Cylinder mowers are not designed for mulching
- Clippings can't be redistributed without collection box
- Leaving clippings reduces cut quality and aesthetics
Clipping disposal:
- Compost (excellent for gardens)
- Municipal yard waste
- Mulch for garden beds
- Don't: Put in landfill trash
Bottom line: Always use the grass collection box. It's fundamental to cylinder mowing's superior results.
Can I mow wet grass?
You can, but it's not ideal:
Why wet mowing is problematic:
- Clumping: Wet grass clumps in collection box and on reel
- Slipping: Wet grass is harder to cut cleanly (blades slip instead of cut)
- Wheel marks: Soft wet soil shows wheel tracks more prominently
- Compaction: Risk of soil compaction from mower weight on wet ground
- Mess: Wet clippings stick to mower, harder to clean
- Safety: Slippery conditions (slopes especially dangerous)
When you must mow wet:
- Raise HOC: Cut higher to remove less material (reduces clumping)
- Slow down: Slower speed allows reel to handle wet grass better
- Empty grass box more often: Wet clippings are heavier, fill box faster
- Clean immediately after: Don't let wet clippings dry on mower
- Avoid soft areas: Skip parts of lawn that are waterlogged
Best practice:
- Wait for morning dew to dry (usually by 10-11 AM)
- Mow after 2-4 hours following rain (let grass blades dry)
- Avoid standing water areas entirely
Exception: Morning dew is generally fine to mow through, especially if you're on a schedule. It's heavier rain or saturated grass that causes problems.
How do I create stripe patterns in my lawn?
Stripes are created by light reflecting differently off grass bent in opposite directions:
Basic stripe technique:
- Mow straight lines in one direction (north to south, for example)
- Turn at end of lawn
- Mow back in opposite direction (south to north) in adjacent pass
- Overlap slightly (~2-3 inches) to avoid missing strips
- The roller (front or rear depending on model) bends grass, creating stripe effect
Tips for crisp stripes:
- Sharp reel is critical (dull reels produce poor stripes)
- Consistent speed (don't speed up/slow down mid-pass)
- Straight lines (use spray marker or follow landmarks when learning)
- Healthy grass (thin or patchy grass doesn't stripe well)
- Proper mowing height (15-20mm is easiest, too short is harder to stripe)
Advanced patterns:
- Checkerboard: Mow entire lawn one direction, then perpendicular
- Diamonds: 45-degree angle passes, then perpendicular
- Circles: Start at edge, work toward center (difficult)
- Waves: Gentle curves instead of straight lines (advanced)
Troubleshooting poor stripes:
- Dull reel → Schedule sharpening
- Grass too short → Raise HOC to 15-20mm
- Inconsistent lines → Practice straight passes
- Grass not dense enough → Overseed, fertilize, improve grass health
- Wrong grass type → Fine-textured grasses stripe best (bluegrass, ryegrass)

What's the difference between scarifying, aerating, and verticutting?
These are different lawn renovation techniques available with Allett cartridges:
SCARIFYING:
- What it does: Aggressively rakes up moss, thatch, and dead material
- Blades: Spring-tine scarifying blades that penetrate ~10mm into turf
- When to do: Spring and/or fall (once or twice per year)
- Why: Removes thatch layer, improves air/water penetration, stimulates new growth
- Result: Lawn looks terrible immediately (lots of material removed), recovers in 2-3 weeks
- Cartridge: Scarifier cartridge
AERATING (Slitting):
- What it does: Cuts narrow slits into soil to relieve compaction
- Blades: Solid tines or slitter blades that penetrate 30-50mm
- When to do: Spring and/or fall, or as needed for heavy traffic areas
- Why: Relieves soil compaction, improves root growth, enhances water/nutrient uptake
- Result: Small slits visible for 1-2 weeks, minimal surface disruption
- Cartridge: Aerator cartridge (slitter style)
Note: Different from core aeration (which removes plugs)
VERTICUTTING:
- What it does: Cuts vertical grooves in turf surface
- Blades: Solid vertical blades that cut 5-10mm deep
- When to do: Before overseeding, to thin aggressive grasses, or address grain
- Why: Prepares seed bed, thins dense turf, improves overseeding success
- Result: Shallow grooves, minimal disruption, ideal before overseeding
- Cartridge: Verticut cartridge
DETHATCHING:
- What it does: Light thatch removal (less aggressive than scarifying)
- Blades: Fixed or spring-tine blades, shallower penetration than scarifier
- When to do: Spring or fall, for light thatch maintenance
- Why: Prevents thatch buildup without full scarifying intensity
- Result: Less aggressive than scarifying, moderate material removal
- Cartridge: Dethatcher cartridge
Which do I need?
- Moss problem: Scarifying
- Thatch over 12mm thick: Scarifying or dethatching
- Compacted soil / heavy traffic: Aerating
- Before overseeding: Verticutting
- Routine maintenance: Dethatching annually
Most popular cartridges: Scarifier and Aerator. These handle 90% of renovation needs.
