The Real Cost of Neglected Maintenance
Prevention is always cheaper than repair
-
A cylinder mower is a precision instrument. Unlike rotary mowers that can run neglected for years, reel mowers require consistent care to maintain cutting quality and prevent expensive failures.
-
The Hidden Costs of DIY-Only Maintenance:
Premature Component Failure
Skipping professional maintenance leads to accelerated wear. A $150 annual tune-up prevents $800+ bearing and reel replacements.
Neglected lubrication destroys bearings. Ignored belt wear leads to drive system damage.
Performance Degradation
Without regular height-of-cut calibration, your mower gradually loses precision. What starts as "close enough" becomes increasingly inaccurate. By the time you notice, your lawn quality has suffered for months.
Shortened Lifespan
Properly maintained Allett mowers last 15-20+ years. Neglected units fail at 5-7 years. The difference isn't the mower—it's the maintenance. Professional care extends usable life by 2-3x
Loss of Warranty Coverage
Many failures that should be covered under warranty are denied due to lack of maintenance records. Professional service creates a documented history that protects your coverage.
Emergency Repairs During Peak Season
Neglected maintenance doesn't prevent breakdowns—it ensures they happen at the worst possible time. Mid-June failures mean 2-3 week repair waits when demand is highest.
Our Maintenance Philosophy
We believe in proactive care over reactive repair. Scheduled service catches small issues before they become big problems.
Our programs are designed around real-world Canadian use patterns—not just manufacturer minimums.

FAQ
Use this text to share information about your product or shipping policies.
Do I really need professional maintenance, or can I do it myself?
You can handle basic tasks (cleaning, grass box emptying, visual inspections), but professional service is critical for:
- Height of cut calibration (requires specialized gauges)
- Reel sharpening (needs professional grinding equipment)
- Bearing inspection and lubrication (prevents premature failure)
- Belt tension and drive system adjustment (ensures proper power transfer)
Our maintenance plans ensure nothing is missed.
Many customers do basic upkeep themselves and rely on us for scheduled professional service.
How often should my mower be professionally serviced?
- Residential (weekly use): Annual service minimum, ideally spring tune-up + fall winterization
- High-use residential (2-3x/week): Twice per year (spring + mid-season)
- Light commercial (daily use): Three times per year minimum
- Heavy commercial: Quarterly or every 200-300 operating hours
Our maintenance plans are structured around these intervals.
What happens if I skip maintenance and something breaks?
Depends on the failure:
- Wear-related failures (bearings, belts, blades): Not covered under warranty, you pay for repair
- Component failures due to neglect: Warranty claim will likely be denied
- Manufacturing defects: Still covered IF you can demonstrate proper maintenance
Without maintenance records, proving proper care is difficult. Warranty claims over $500 typically require documentation.
Can I use any repair shop, or must I use Allett Canada?
For warranty work, repairs must be performed by authorized Allett service centers (we're the primary authorized center in Canada).
For out-of-warranty repairs, you can use any qualified technician, but:
- Non-genuine parts may void remaining warranty coverage
- Improper repairs may cause additional damage
- You lose access to our parts expertise and technical support
What's included in a "tune-up"?
Our standard tune-up includes:
- Engine oil change
- Spark plug replacement
- Air filter cleaning or replacement
- Belt inspection and tension adjustment
- Drive system lubrication
- Cutting cylinder/bed knife inspection and adjustment
- Height of cut calibration
- Operational safety check
- Full cleaning
Takes about 90-120 minutes. Cost: $150 for non-members, included with maintenance plans.
How do I know if my reel needs sharpening?
Signs your reel is dull:
- Grass tips look torn or ragged instead of cleanly cut
- Grass browns 24-48 hours after mowing (stressed from tearing)
- Mower requires more power than usual to cut
- Stripes are less defined or uneven
- You hear the reel "ticking" against the bed knife inconsistently
If you see 2+ of these signs, it's time to sharpen.
Most residential users need sharpening 1x/year.
High-use and commercial users need 2-4x/year.
What voids my warranty?
Common warranty-voiding actions:
- Installing aftermarket cutting cylinders or drive components
- Using non-recommended fuel or oil
- Commercial use on a residential warranty
- Modifications to engine or drive system
- Operating with damaged or missing safety features
- Lack of basic maintenance (verifiable neglect)
General rule: Use it as intended, maintain it properly, use genuine parts for repairs.
Can I transfer my warranty if I sell the mower?
Yes, we ship all over the world. Shipping costs will apply, and will be added at checkout. We run discounts and promotions all year, so stay tuned for exclusive deals.
How long will it take to get my orders?
It depends on where you are. Orders processed here will take 5-7 business days to arrive. Overseas deliveries can take anywhere from 7-16 days. Delivery details will be provided in your confirmation email.
